"Spotlight" Wins Best Picture At 88th Academy Award

A win for journalism and a win for all the victims who were molested by priests.

A big congratulations to the cast and crew of "Spotlight" for winning Best Picture tonight at The Academy Awards. Yes, "Mad Max: Fury Road", in my opinion, deserves the win the most out of the 8 nominated films, but "Spotlight" is a truly important work of cinema that will transcend time and shines a light on a horrific and just inhumane actions that are happening in the world, even today. The bravery of these journalists is extraordinary and deserves to be recognized.

Congrats for taking home the gold.

Leonardo DiCaprio Wins First Academy Award For "The Revenant"

It finally happened.

Although I don't post about the Oscars very much, this is a very special night for me. Tonight at The Academy Awards, Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar for his work in "The Revenant". This was the moment that we've all been waiting to see for years. In 2015, I have not seen a more visceral, impactful, heartbreaking and emotional performance like DiCaprio's. He has been one of Hollywood's best actors of this new generation and right now, tonight, we honor him for his achievements.

Thank you for being a great inspiration for me as a filmmaker and for your always incredibly amazing roles.

This is your moment. Bask in it. It's glorious.

BREAKING: "Pacific Rim" Sequel Moves Forward With Steven S. DeKnight As Director

The kajius and Jaegers are coming back!

Many of us were severely disappointed when we heard that production of the "Pacific Rim" sequel was stopped indefinitely by the studio and didn't seem to progress any further with original director Guillermo del Toro. But now, Deadline is reporting that Steven S. DeKnight (the showrunner of "Marvel's Daredevil") will be directing the sequel, making his directorial film debut, while del Toro will stay on as producer. Nothing about the cast has been mentioned and there is no official release date set for the film, but it is comforting to see that "Pacific Rim 2" is moving forward in production.

Our hopes and cheers were heard and "Pacific Rim" still holds life!

BREAKING: "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" Ultimate Edition Officially Rated R

Day vs. Night.

"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is almost a month away and it's already giving us fanboys another thing to hype over. It has been reported that the DVD Ultimate Edition of the film was officially rated R by the MPAA.

If this is true, we're going to be seeing some brutal Bats vs. Supes action. This pretty much means that comic books fans will see this film twice (once in theaters and once at home) whether they end up liking the film or not. Can't wait to buy the Ultimate Edition later this year!

"Star Wars: Episode VIII" Announcement Trailer Released

The new world expands...

Disney and Lucasfilm have released a short teaser, announcing that "Star Wars: Episode VIII" has begun its production, revealing what we presume was the first day of shooting. It looks like the film will begin right where we left off at the end of "The Force Awakens" so I suggest not watching this announcement video if you haven't seen "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".

We're already getting excited for the film and we're so far away from it!

"Deadpool" Breaking February Box Office Records

Fifty Shades of Wade?

Yesterday, it was reported that "Deadpool" grossed $12.7 million on its Thursday night preview screenings, making it the highest grossing Thursday night in February history. Now, it has been reported that the merc with the mouth was able to gross $47.5 million, beating the previous record holder "Fifty Shades of Grey".

The film was originally pegged for a $55 million opening weekend but now it is projected to gross about $115 million this weekend and $130 million during the 4-day Presidents' Day weekend.

People, go see "Deadpool" if you haven't done so already! It deserves all of your money and your attention. It's an extremely enjoyable film that the insanely clever viral marketing campaign promised us.

"Transformer" 5, 6 And 7 Release Dates Announced By Paramount

Autobots, roll... out?

Even after the disaster that was "Transformer: Age of Extinction", it looks like Paramount is continuing this horrible saga of films with 3 other installments coming up in the next few years. It has been reported not too long ago that Michael Bay will return to direct the upcoming and untitled 5th film in the franchise that is set for a June 23, 2017 release date.

Today, Paramount has also announced that a 6th and 7th installment of the series will be released on June 8th, 2018 and June 29th, 2019 respectively.

The 5th "Transformers" film will be directly competing against Warner Bros. and DC's "Wonder Woman" on June 23, 2017 while the 6th film will be fighting against the king of monsters with the "Godzilla" sequel on June 8th, 2018. In June of 2017, we will have the sequel to "Kingsman: The Secret Service", "Wonder Woman", "Despicable Me 3" and the live action remake of the "Uncharted" video game. In June of 2018, we will have the "Godzilla" sequel, "Toy Story 4" and the sequel to "Jurassic World". And finally in June of 2019, we will, so far, have "Justice League: Part 2" and the longly anticipated sequel to "The Incredibles"... Lot of competitors here.

Needless to say, the "Transformers" franchise has some big competition at the box office and I am not confident that they will win this time, at least internationally. "Transformers: Age of Extinction" was the lowest grossing film in the series domestically and it seems that we, as an audience, are already sick and tired of the Michael Bay-style films in general. Will we continue to have interest in them in 2017, 2018 and 2019? I highly doubt it.

What do you think of the 5th, 6th and 7th installments of the "Transformers" series?

"Deadpool" Sets New Thursday Night Record At The Box Office

Guess we all ate that sweet chimichanga yesterday.

"Deadpool" has set a new record for Thursday preview showings, earning $12.7 million, making it the biggest Thursday opening for an R-rated film with the previous record holder being "The Hangover Part II". Although initial estimates said the film will make $55 million opening weekend, adjustments are now made to $70+ million over the 4-day weekend.

It's so great to see so much love and attention this film is getting. "Deadpool" deserves your praise and your money. Go see it in theaters now!

REVIEW: "Deadpool"

Wait. Wasn't his mouth sewn shut? And is he played by Green Lantern? No. And yes. Comic book fans have waited years to see their favorite merc with the mouth on the big screen and now, in 2016, Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds have brought us what we wanted. Although, this is technically not the first time we've seen Deadpool on the big screen. In 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", we've witnessed a bastardized version of the character with arm blades and his mouth sewn shut. For obvious reasons, this made hardcore comic book fans extremely angry. However, there is one person on this planet that hated the decision to sew the iconic character's mouth shut more than anyone: Ryan Reynolds. The man has tried to lift this project off the ground for years and finally over 10 years later, his dream project became a reality. And now, after one of the most brilliantly conceived viral marketing plans ever, the film now open nationwide. How was the film?

"Deadpool" stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T. J. Miller, Gina Carano, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapičić and Leslie Uggams, and is directed by Tim Miller. The film centers around Wade Wilson who, after being diagnosed with cancer, enters a secret experimental program that grants him unbelievable regenerative abilities but disfigures him and causes him to go slightly insane. Now that Wade has adopted the name Deadpool and has become a [near] immortal being, he sets out on a revenge journey to find the ones that experimented on him and to save the love of his life, who they have captive. This, ladies and gentlemen, is an absolute triumph. It's everything the brilliant marketing for the film promised. It's foul-mouthed, witty, bloody with a touch of romance that rivals Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in charm.

To say that Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool is an understatement. Much like Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark, Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool. He embodies everything that this character is and more. He's immature, vulgar, lusts to kill and is out of his mind. This is definitely not the Deadpool we saw in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". This is the proper Deadpool from the comics that we've grown to love. Every breaking-the-fourth-wall outbursts he has in the film are beyond hilarious and his ability to portray almost every emotion in this supposed silly film impressed me. Reynold's performance mixed with one of the wittiest, sharpest and funniest screenplays in recent memory truly made the film brilliant and we can thank him enough for being our favorite mercenary.

One key element that could have ruined this action-packed, hilarious film would have been the romance, but with clever writing and spot-on casting, the filmmakers behind "Deadpool" managed to pull of one sweet love story amidst this insane film. Morena Baccarin nails it as Wade Wilson's love interest, Vanessa Carlysle (the superhero Copycat from "X-Force"), by being extraordinarily beautiful, witty, charming, funny and equally as crazy as Deadpool himself. As mentioned earlier, the chemistry they share together on screen truly does rival that of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in "The Amazing Spider-Man" films. 'Twas the perfect romance for two perfectly insane people and we, as the audience, loved every minute of it.

Although the title doesn't have the word "X-Men" in it, the film does feature some "X-Men" characters, namely Colossus and Negasonic Teenager Warhead. The filmmakers were able to cleverly meld this insane world of Deadpool with the world of the X-Men, which never felt forced or out of place. Colossus in this film was how he should have been in the other "X-Men" films: Russian and larger than life. Although Daniel Cudmore, the actor who played Colossus in the previous "X-Men" films, does all he can with what he is given, I feel like this performance done by Stefan Kapičić (voice) and Andre Tricoteux (motion capture) was more true to the Colossus we know in the comics.

Negasonic Teenager Warhead is a mutant superhero that most people, even comic books fans (hell I didn't even know who she was), didn't know until "Deadpool". Her powers consisting of telepathy and precognition was changed by the filmmakers to more fit the character's super cool name. And as an X-Men trainee, I hope to see her again in the "X-Men" franchise. Brianna Hildebrand, an relatively unknown actress, brought teenage angst (which, by the way, never diminishes her cool character) and strength in the film that offered us many laughs and awesome moments.

A problem most people have with the films from Marvel Studios would be the villains. Even in films that were universally praised like "Guardians of the Galaxy" or "Ant-Man", the single biggest complaint of either film would be the big baddies chasing after our good guy. Thankfully in "Deadpool", the villains are grimy, disturbing and threatening, making them all the more evil. Because Deadpool himself isn't a superhero, the villains were made even worse. Ed Skrein as Ajax, the man responsible for disfiguring Wade Wilson, was imposing and sadistic. Although he isn't a compelling character per say, Ajax is simply meant to be a threatening rival to Deadpool and Skrein gave us one brutally enjoyable performance. Gina Carano as Angel Dust, a mutant working with Ajax, was a woman of few words and was a physically imposing presence throughout the film.

After seeing last year's "Mad Max: Fury Road", I found myself in a position where I am now less impressed with action movies because of how amazing the stunt work and cinematography was in "Mad Max: Fury Road". With that being said, I'm pleased to say that "Deadpool" has some of the most creative, funny, brutal and fast-paced action scenes I've ever seen. Mixing funny and brutal together alone is difficult, but making the action fast-paced and relentless at the same time was a tall order. From guns to swords to fists, the action in "Deadpool" was directed beautifully and melded CGI animation seamlessly.

However, I will say with full confidence that the action scenes are not what make "Deadpool" an amazing picture. What does make "Deadpool" great is the script. The screenplay, written by "Zombieland" writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, has written one of the funniest films I've seen in a very long time. The two of them must've had an amazing time writing this insane script that contains jokes about Ryan Reynold's filmography (specifically "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Green Lantern"), a sex montage, extremely crude dialogue and insane violence.

In an age where we get multiple superhero films from competing studios every year, "Deadpool" comes in and takes a dump on all of it while shouting his name repeatedly at the audience. It's a breath of fresh air and is unlike any superhero film we've seen to date. This is what happens when you give the filmmakers full control over their work. What this is is a love letter to who Deadpool is and his inability to shut the fuck up. I am so pleased with this movie and I gotta give it a 10 out of 10. There really isn't any small thing I could add or subtract to make the film better. It did it's job and we are all the more happy for it. Go see "Deadpool" now!

Go see it in theaters [and IMAX] today!

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" Earns $900 Million Domestically, Expected To Cross $2 Billion This Weekend

Continuing to break new grounds.

By the end of today (February 5th, 2016), "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will break new grounds and gross $900 million domestically [without inflation], becoming the first film not directed by James Cameron to do so in cinema history. The film is also expected to cross the $2 billion mark by this weekend, becoming one of 3 films in history to achieve this momentous goal (the other two being  James Cameron's "Avatar" and "Titanic").

While I am not as enthusiastic about "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" as most people, I am over-the-moon happy that the film is doing so well domestically and internationally. No matter what I thought of the 7th installment, it was the comeback to the beloved franchise that we needed and something many fans hold close to their hearts. As a "Star Wars" fan, seeing the franchise cross the $2 billion mark is very exciting.

REVIEW: "Hail, Caesar!"

Would that it were so simple. In the modern age of cinema the Coen brothers have brought us a unique taste of filmmaking that we haven't seen before. Films like "Fargo", "Barton Fink", "The Big Lebowski" and "No Country For Old Men" are all some of the finest works of cinema in recent memory as the Coens cemented themselves as one of the best directors of our time. And now in 2016, they dynamic duo are back with a story set in the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1950s. With an all-star cast and frequent collaborator Roger Deakins helming the cinematography, many of us film lovers were excited to see this seemingly funny tale. The official trailers were met with positive reviews from audiences and garnered much attention from those who live and breathe cinema. And what did we think of their latest film endeavor?

"Hail, Caesar!" stars an ensemble cast, including Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum, and is directed by the Coen brothers. Set in 1950s Hollywood, a Hollywood "fixer" Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) discovers that Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), the star of the film-within-a-film "Hail, Caesar!", was kidnapped by a group of people calling themselves The Future. The race begins as Mannix tries to retrieve his missing movie star as he tries to get the film, "Hail, Caesar!", completed. Although not a masterpiece, I am pleased to say that the Coens are back at it again with another odd, funny, meaningful and provocative piece. With some of the funniest scenes I've seen in quite some time, the Coens' wit and sharpness bleeds through every scene of the film.

One of the great things "Hail, Caesar!" has going for it is its amazing cast that, as mentioned before, includes Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum, who all deliver great performances.

Josh Brolin is definitely no stranger to the Coens' directing style and therefore gives probably one of the best performances of his career. While it is not as dramatic or as big as other roles he has taken on in his career, he completely disappears into the character of Eddie Mannix. Not once in the film did I see Josh Brolin, I only saw Eddie Mannix. His little mannerisms, charm, wit, likability and toughness are all things that made him stand out in this ensemble cast. I am certain that Brolin will be nominated for several awards for his hilarious portrayal of this new character and I hope that the Academy or other award shows will recognize his performance.

When you hear the phrase "movie star", George Clooney is one of those names that would pop up in everyones minds because of his charm and persona. Coincidentally, Clooney's movie-star-like persona carries into his role of movie star Baird Whitlock. Clooney's character in the film is definitely a nod to the Kirk Douglas or Charlton Heston leading men types who have played Biblical characters in epic classics during the 1950s. The Coens' love for the era and the era's actors really does show in this lovably gullible yet charming character that is played to near perfection by Clooney. Just terrific casting.

By far, the best scene in the film involves director Laurence Laurentz (Ralph Fiennes), trying desperately to make an actor who is mostly known for playing cowboys, Hobie Doyle (Alden Ehrenreich), to appropriately say his lines in Laurentz's film. Fiennes has proven his comedic chops in 2014's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and he continues to shine in "Hail, Caesar!" with his elegant British nature. And to oppose him, Alden Ehrenreich's dumb yet charming personality he gives to Hobie Doyle is just fantastic to watch. Chipper, pleasant and always enthusiastic, Ehrenreich arguing with Fiennes over a simple line read was just absolutely hysterical.

Putting the black skin-tight suit from "The Avengers" aside, Scarlett Johnasson portrays "aquamusical" actress, DeeAnna Moran, in "Hail, Caesar!", who shines in the film's most beautifully shot and executed scene. While her role in the film is rather minimal, Johansson leaves you with a big impression with her impeccable beauty and her excellent comedic timing.

We've all seen Channing Tatum dance in films like "Step Up" and "Magic Mike" but we've never actually seen him sing. Well, in "Hail, Caesar!", the Coen brothers put him to good use and made him sing and tap dance in a big musical number in the middle of the film. Like Johansson, his role in the film is small, but Tatum leaves us with a big smile on our faces and makes the scenes he is in some of the most memorable moments in all of "Hail, Caesar!".

With Roger Deakins handling the cinematography for the film, you can expect "Hail, Caesar!" to be excellently shot with beautiful camera angles that mirror how movies of the 1950s were filmed. The beautiful landscapes of the Hollywood studios and the homages to the many musical numbers and epic films were just gorgeous to look at. The Coen brothers' eye for capturing incredible shots and unusual [and most religious] visuals has never been stronger here. Almost every single technical aspect of the film is done to perfection. The visuals and the music, composed by Carter Burwell, complimented each other beautifully in this gorgeous looking film.

However, with all that said, the one and only issue I have with the film is its narrative, which does suffer from odd pacing choices. The film will travel from one funny scene into a dramatic scene into another talking about the meaning of man and social economics then back to funny without a moment's notice. That isn't something that's completely unusual for the Coen brothers, however I wish the film could have handled the change of tone a little smoother so that we as the audience have time to breathe in between scenes.

Overall, "Hail, Caesar!" is not only hilarious, but carries a very important message about Hollywood and the film industry as a whole. It is heavy in its themes but never forces it down your throat. The Coens present us with the film that poses questions and points fingers while not making direct accusations, which I do admire. "Hail, Caesar!" is a beautiful shot, brilliantly acted, well executed and wholly original Hollywood satire that you should see in theaters immediately. I'd give the film an 8.5 out of 10.

Go see it in theaters today!

Pixar: 30th Anniversary

30 years ago on this very day, the now legendary Pixar Animation Studios was founded with the help of Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs.

The studio created their first animated short film, "The Adventures of André and Wally B.", in 1984 and their first feature film, "Toy Story", in 1995. Since then, they have produced 16 feature films with their 17th film, "Finding Dory", set for a June 17, 2016 release date. This amazing studio has brought us some of the greatest works of animation of our time and has now become almost like family to us. Much like their film "Inside Out" [now nominated and frontrunner for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature], Pixar has made us feel many different emotions in the past decades and we will always love and appreciate what the creative people at this wondrous company have created.

Thank you for your vision, Pixar! Happy 30th!
